北韓9日上午第5次核試爆，爆炸威力乃歷來最強一次，這是繼年初聲稱試爆氫彈，加上近幾月接二連三射導彈後，最新一次引人矚目的行動，不僅升高朝鮮半島緊張局勢，也顯示聯合國及國際諸多制裁，無任何效用。
南韓慶南大學遠東所教授金東燁分析，核試爆通常須在2、3個月前準備，非短短幾天前決定就可進行，顯見北韓早預作準備，計畫今年下半年行動。其實3月就可從衛星影像看見，北韓人員在豐溪里活動，美智庫當時警告，北韓隨時可能5次核試爆。
至於北韓這次試爆目的，金東燁說，由於美總統歐巴馬任期將屆滿，權力影響力不若之前，北韓藉核爆向聯合國、美國嗆聲，宣告對北韓的制裁無任何效用。
北韓自2006年10月首次核試爆以來，至今5次，這次試爆與上次間隔8月；核試爆的爆炸當量相當1萬噸黃色炸藥，也是歷來規模最大一次，顯示北韓核武能力更精進。
接連警告 北韓置若罔聞
今年1月北韓宣稱成功試爆氫彈，接下來先後試射短中程飛彈，其中一枚墜落日本海域。接著北韓因不滿美韓部署薩德，進行軍演，模擬對南韓發動核武攻擊。
面對動作頻頻的北韓，韓美日三國決加強合作，而聯合國安理會4月表決，通過對北韓歷來最嚴厲制裁，連北韓堅定盟友－中國也投贊成票。
對國際接二連三的譴責、警告和制裁，北韓置若罔聞。就在9日核試爆前夕，結束任內最後一次亞洲行的歐巴馬，針對外界質疑其北韓政策失敗表示，想改變平壤當局是一件難事，美不排除考慮「其他策略」。
美日韓熱線 保證金難過
歐巴馬得知北韓核試爆後，與日韓領袖通熱線，除重申對兩國安全承諾外，並保證，金正恩必定要為挑釁行為面對嚴重後果。
歐巴馬還說，「我們不斷探索可採取的其他策略，包括同時與韓、日、中及俄羅斯有關方面密切磋商。」歐巴馬未進一步說明「其他策略」是否包括攻擊手段，但他表示，只要平壤對展開朝鮮半島無核化對話態度認真，美國隨時願進行對話。
